The low-emissivity or "low-e" glass is a glass used in order to achieve a reduction in heat loss from the inside of the vehicle. It consists in applying a low emissivity coating on one side that allows most of the shortwave solar radiation from the sun passes through the glass while reflecting most of the longwave radiation heating systems produce, among other sources, thus keeping heat inside the rooms. It is recommended for cold areas where it is necessary to make use the heat generated in the interior and the exterior from the sun, and make the better use of natural light. One of its main applications is the architectural glass where, in most cases, clear transparent glass is used. When used in hermetic double glazed units consisting of an outer solar control glass, tinted or reflective, also improves solar control performance by approximately 15%. The coated side with low-emissivity coating must always be facing the air chamber of the hermetic double glazed unit.
- The K value of energy transmission for insulating units with an air gap of 12 mm, with normal glass, is 2.8 W/m2K while with Low-E glass it is K = 1.8 W/m2K.
- It is exclusively used as interior glass of waterproof double glazed units, improving by 35% its insulating performance.
- Moreover it contributes to reduce the load that gets through the hermetic double glazed unit by solar radiation.
- In case low-e glass is tempered, it keeps the same features as tempered glass (see more on tempered glass) without low-E treatment affecting its properties.
- In case of low-e glass is laminated, it maintains the same characteristics as laminated glass (see more on laminated glass) without low-E treatment affecting its properties.
